A Muffuletta is a sandwich made on a large loaf of bread, with layers of salami, mortadella, capicola, swiss cheese, and provolone cheese, topped with a marinated olive salad. It may or may not be heated.
Muffuletta also refers to the bread on which the sandwich is prepared. The bread is normally about 10 inches long and 6 inches around. Full sandwiches are available for purchase at many restaurants and deli's, however half and quarter sandwiches are very popular due to the sheer size of the bread and fillings.
Olive Salad What?
The olive salad is made with chopped pimento stuffed green olives, black olives, celery, capers, cocktail onions, pepperoncini, cauliflower and carrot. These are marinated overnight in olive oil and various seasonings including black pepper, garlic, oregano and celery seeds.
