Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Categories: Entertainment | Movies
  • Directed by Frank Capra, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is an Academy Award-winning film which depicts the trials and tribulations of an idealistic senate replacement who takes on political corruption in Washington.

The film is based on the Lewis R. Foster novel The Gentlemen from Montana and, in addition to Stewart, starred a bevy of well-known actors including Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, Edward Arnold and Guy Kibbee.

When the film was released in 1939, it was attacked by the press and members of the U.S. Congress as anti-American and pro-Communist for suggesting that any corruption existed in the U.S. government. The film was outright banned in Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Soviet Russia.

Story has it that when a ban on American films was imposed in German-occupied France in 1942, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was the last film some theaters showed as an act of protest against the occupation. The film is now largely recognized as a deeply patriotic American classic.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for 10 others, including Best Picture, Director and Actor.
