The 2005 action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith concerns a married couple who discover that they have each been leading a double life as an elite assassin, and have now been hired to kill one another. It is not a remake of the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name.

Casting
Several actors were considered for the leading roles before Pitt and Jolie were attached. Other actors considered for the role of Mr. Smith were Johnny Depp and Will Smith while Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aishwarya Rai, Gwen Stefani and Cate Blanchett were all possibilities for Mrs. Smith.
Angela Bassett shot scenes for the film as Mr. Smith's boss, but was cut from the finished version. Her voice can still be heard on the other end of a phone, giving him instructions.

While filming this movie together, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie fell in love and started their much-publicized romantic relationship.
