  • Plot Synopsis

David (Robert Montgomery) and Ann (Carole Lombard) Smith have a very happy and sophisticated New York marriage with a few extra rules thrown in that are a little strange.

The rule that ends up starting the craziness in their otherwise happy relationship is the one which gives them both the privilege of each of them being able to ask the other partner one question a month. There is only one catch: the other person must answer the question completely truthfully. This basically "truth or dare" question had never caused any issues in their three year marriage, at least not until the day Ann asked David if he would marry her again if he could go back in time. Playing strictly by the rules, David answers as truthfully as he could saying "no", that he was feeling like he was missing his bachelor days. As they say timing is everything, because later that day they are both independently informed that due to a legal technicality their marriage was invalid and that they would have to be remarried.

Not knowing that Anne was also given this information, David finds himself intrigued with the concept of having a romantic affair with his wife and makes plans to take her to a very special restaurant. Ann thinks that David is going to ask her to marry him again at dinner. When that doesn't happen she thinks about him telling her he wouldn't marry her again if he had the chance. She gets mad and kicks him out of the house.

It doesn't take long for David to realize that he really would want to marry her again, but by now Ann is throwing herself at David's law partner Jeff (Gene Raymond) in an attempt to make David jealous. David gets hurt and angry and things become more complicated, crazy and funny by the moment. http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117793269.html?categoryid=31&cs=1

"Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery are teamed successfully here in a light and gay marital farce, with accent on the laugh side through generation of continual bickering of the pair."Variety Staff http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117793269.html?categoryid=31&cs=1<d/ref>

"To spin this off-center comedy, one needs actors who can catch a jest on the wing. Mr. Hitchcock has them. Carole Lombard caromes through the role of Mrs. Smith as if she hadn't a brain in her head, which is what she is supposed to do. Robert Montgomery as the confused husband has never been funnier than in that moment when he tries to escape an embarrassing situation by courageously punching his own nose. Gene Raymond, however, as the intruding male, is too colorless to serve as a really convincing foil."—T.S.
