Casting
Several actors were considered for the leading roles before Pitt and Jolie were attached. Other actors considered for the role of Mr. Smith were Johnny Depp and Will Smith while Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aishwarya Rai, Gwen Stefani and Cate Blanchett were all possibilities for Mrs. Smith.Angela Bassett shot scenes for the film as Mr. Smith's boss, but was cut from the finished version. Her voice can still be heard on the other end of a phone, giving him instructions.
