Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian composer and musician. He was born in Salzburg, Austria on January 27, 1756.http://www.biography.com/articles/Wolfgang-Mozart-9417115 His parents, Leopold Mozart and Anna Maria Mozart had an older child, Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart, named after their mother. Of the seven children the couple had, Mozart and his sister were the only two which survived infancy.

The musical arts came to Mozart very naturally, and he displayed much interest in music as a young boy. Nannerl recounted that the three-year old Mozart "often spent much time at the clavier, picking out thirds, which he was always striking, and his pleasure showed that it sounded good."http://www.mozartproject.org/biography/bi_56_60.html

Mozart was composing and performing his own pieces by the age of five, and was very serious with music from the beginning. Leopold sent a letter to his son Mozart, dated February 16, 1778 that read, "As a child and a boy you were serious rather than childish and when you sat at the clavier or were otherwise intent on music, no one dared to have the slightest jest with you. Why, even your expression was so solemn that...many discerning people of different countries doubted whether your life would be a long one."http://www.wamozartfan.com/bio.html

Life

In 1762, Mozart and his family traveled to Munich where he and Nannerl played for Maximilian III, the prince-elector of Bavaria and future Emperor of Austria.http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/classical/article6736742.ece In September of the same year, the family traveled to Passau, where Mozart was awarded the honor of performing a solo concert attended by the prince-bishop, Joseph Maria Thun-Hohenstein.

In October of the same year, the Mozart family arrived in Vienna. Their arrival drew much attention, and several days later the pair was playing a three-hour concert for the imperial couple, Maria Theresa and Francis I. As a gift for their performance, empress Maria Theresa ordered that the lilac-colored suit originally made for their son Maximilian Franz was to be given to young Mozart.http://books.google.com/books?id=wKm3sCZeyr8C&pg=PA505&lpg=PA505&dq=maria+theresa+gave+mozart+a+suit&source=bl&ots=Cl6o3QrMW1&sig=UwiN0bPj3uX2rlIOGpxAXKG4okg&hl=en&ei=TCbaTInPJoqcsQOD5-ToBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCEQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q&f=false

Career

As a child, Mozart traveled throughout Europe performing, visiting such places as: Augsburg, Mannheim, Mainz, Frankfurt, Koblenz, Bonn, Cologne, Brussles and Paris. http://www.visit-salzburg.net/mozart.htm The family was invited to play for the Bavarian minister of Paris, performed in the presence of Princess Amalia of Prussia and eventually invited to the royal palace of Louis XV, King of France.

IIn 1764, Mozart traveled to London, to play for king George III and the queen, Charlotte Sophia. In that same year, he was invited to play for the royal court on three separate occasions. It was during this time that he composed several Sonatas for both the keyboard and violin.

In 1769, the family traveled to Italy, where they played in Verona, Milan, and for Pope Clement XIV in Florence. As Mozart became more widely known, and began performing more, his sister Nannerl slowly began to withdraw from the act. Mozart and his father continued to tour alone, with occasional visits from the family, until eventually Mozart was traveling alone. While he was on tour in 1778, his mother passed away.

In 1785, Mozart and his friends played three of the six string quartets dedicated to Haydn, now know as the Haydn Quartets.

Between 1787 and the time of his death in 1791, Mozart experienced the death of his sister-in-law, father and two children. At the same time he completed such pieces as: Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) and Così fan tutte. The last piece he composed was the Requiem Mass in D Minor (K. 626), with whom he received assistance from fellow composer, Franz Xaver Süssmayr.http://www.biography.com/articles/Wolfgang-Mozart-9417115
