    • Pronounced: moos-sa-KA
    • Popular in the Mediterranean World
    • Usually made with Eggplant and Lamb
    • Vegetarian variations popular
  • Moussaka is a traditional eggplant dish that is especially popular in Greek and Turkish cuisine. Greek moussaka is three layers - eggplant, ground lamb or beef, and tomatoes - topped with a bechamel sauce and baked. The Turkish version of the dish is generally not layered. Variants of the dish include zucchini and potatoes.
  • History

Moussaka's history is shrouded in mystery. A very similar dish appears in a 13th century Arabic cookbook, and thus it seems likely that it came to Greece from that region. Food historians say it is descended from the Arabian dish maghmuna or musakhkhan. Versions can be found in Turkey and Lebanon as well.
