• [[Moulin Rouge!]] is a 2001 Academy Award-winning musical about a young poet (Ewan McGregor) in turn-of-the-century France who falls in love with a famous cabaret actress (Nicole Kidman) who works at the famed Moulin Rogue. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the film was inspired by a number of different musicals and uses retooled contemporary pop songs for many of its musical numbers. The film was an immediate critical and commercial success and went on to receive eight Academy Award nominations (winning two), as well as sparking a renewed interest in the musical genre.
