Cell phone company Motorola, makers of the popular Razr phones, will split off into two separate, publicly traded companies in 2009. Motorola Mobile Devices will attempt to re-enter the competitive cell phone market while Motorola Broadband Mobility Solutions will handle network infrastructure. The deal was masterminded in part by investor Carl Icahn, the second-largest Motorola shareholder, as a response to the company's declining sales and market presence. One of Motorola's primary competitors, Nokia, has similarly splintered, separating its mobile device and network businesses and entering partnerships with Sony and Ericsson.
