Career
Mother Love Bone was part of the late 1980s - early 1990s grunge scene that also spawned Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and the Melvins. Unlike its contemporaries, Mother Love Bone drew more from glam rock bands like T. Rex and Mott the Hoople than punk rock and heavy metal.
Mother Love Bone signed with Mercury Records in 1989, a deal that included the creation of their own record label, Stardog Records. The band released a mini-album, Shine, under Stardog and the full-length Apple under Mercury. Lead singer Andrew Wood died of complications from a heroin overdose days before the release of Apple.
Wood's roommate Chris Cornell teamed with surviving members of Mother Love Bone and former Bad Radio vocalist Eddie Vedder to record a tribute album to Wood, Temple of the Dog. Vedder, Gossard, and Ament went on to form Pearl Jam.
