Moose are an animal that belong to the deer family. The males have palmate antlers, which are large and not twig-like. Twig-like antlers are found on other members of the same family like the White-Tailed Deer.
The word "moose" is derived form the Algonquian Eastern Abnaki word "moz," which means "he trims, shaves." In Europe, moose are called elk.
Moose can be found in boreal forests and mixed deciduous forests in the Northern Hemisphere, which include the majority of Canada, the center and western parts of Alaska, most of New England, the upper Rocky Mountains, northeastern Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula, Lake Superior and Isle Royale in Michigan. The climates are usually temperate or subarctic.
