Monopoly is one of the most popular board games of all times, originally a board game when introduced in 1935, and has since resulted in many international and themed editions and spinoffs. Now this highly popular game is available as a free online game.
Several versions and spin-offs have been released, and many of the older versions can now be obtained as freeware/shareware, allowing limited free play.
- Monopoly Tycoon is a spin-off version of Monopoly, allowing the player to buy and develop properties known from the original Monopoly game. In contrast to the regular Monopoly game, your Monopoly Tycoon world is populated with actual citizens, who rent your apartments and businesses, allowing you to generate money from your investments. The game can be downloaded from CNET as shareware, which allows 30 minutes of free play.
- A more classic version of Monopoly is offered by Parker Brothers. This version offers all the well known elements of Monopoly, including rolling the dice, the square green board with all streets, ‘Go’ ‘Jail’, ‘Chance’, train stations, houses and hotels that players have learned to love and hate. This version can also be downloaded from CNET, and allows 60 minutes of free play.
- EA games offers a free play of Monopoly on its site. This version is an online version of its Monopoly game, which can also be bought for Xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 3, PlayStation 2, Mobile, and iPod. The free version can be played on the site of EA.
- Another free version of Monopoly is available at PS Monopoly. This version allows a multiplayer online monopoly game on the PS Monopoly server, but in order to be able to play for free, you need to sign up with “GameHouse”.
Monopoly Here and Now: The World Edition
At Pogo.com, you can play an online version of Monopoly Here and Now: The World Edition. It allows you to play against up to three opponents, either online real persons, or three computer players. It supports trading and auctioning of properties, allows different rule sets to choose from, and even chat while playing.
