Monopoly As a board game has been around in one form or other since 1903 when a woman named Elizabeth Maggie invented and eventually patented The Landlords Game. http://www.monopoly-history.com/ She later made some improvements and when the patent ran out in 1921 she filed again and was granted a new patent was granted in 1924. In 1934 a gentleman named Charles Darrow acquired a set of rules for the game and obtained a copyright and began manufacturing his version. During this time many other small endeavors also began making small amounts of their version of the game. Parker Brothers became interested in the game and procured Darrow’s version, but when they went to get a patent in his name they found out that the patent for The Landlord game was still in effect so they went to see the original inventor and purchased her patent. And this became the version of the game we are familiar with today. http://www.monopoly-history.com/
