Austrian designer Rudi Gernreich debuted the monokini in 1964, but the revealing nature was snubbed by some. The original design featured only a panty bottom, with two slim straps over the shoulders, leaving the breasts exposed. Despite the risque style, Gernreich sold 3,000 suits at $24 each in the first season. Gernreich went on to design other revealing swimsuit styles, including the thong.Everything Bikini: Monokini
