  • Monkfish is a general term applied to a variety of similar bottom-dwelling species native to the Northwest Atlantic. Monkfish have gaping tooth-filled mouths and long, muscular tails.

    The meat of the monkfish's tail is similar in texture to lobster and is often called "poor man's lobster." The liver of the monkfish is a popular Japanese delicacy, served at sushi bars as "ankimo." The liver and the tail are the only parts of the monkfish suitable for human consumption.
