Monaco is the second smallest nation in the world, and the second most densely populated. Located in Europe, it is divided into 103 wards. It borders France on three sides and the Mediterranean Sea on its fourth. Roughly the same size as New York's Central Park, the city of Monaco and the Principality are essentially the same thing. Tourists are attracted to Monaco by its weather and casino, and its glamorous reputation. Businesspeople are attracted by its lack of income tax and what is seen as lax rules regarding money laundering.
Grimaldi Family
The Grimaldi family has rule in Monaco since the 13th century. Their fortunes mirror the fortunes of Monaco. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Princes continue to hold an important place in Monaco's society. Former monarch Prince Rainier III married American film actress Grace Kelly on April 18, 1956. They had three children, and then she died in 1982. Their son Albert took over as Prince of Monaco shortly before Prince Ranier died on April 6, 2005.
