  • Mona Sutphen has been hired as one of President-elect Barack Obama's deputy Chiefs of Staff. Sutphen worked with the consulting firm Stonebridge International and has worked in the Clinton administration. Sutphen will share the job duties with Jim Messina. Both Sutphen and Messina will be working under Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

    According to reports, Sutphen's specialty is foreign relations. She worked as a foreign service officer on the National Security Council from 1991 to 2000. Sutphen has worked as a diplomat in Bangkok and Sarajevo and was also an advisor to former United Nations Ambassador Bill Richardson. Sutphen co-wrote The Next American Century with Nina Hachigian, which was published January 8, 2008.

    Sutphen has been a foreign policy advisor for Obama during his election campaign and is currently a member of his transition team.
