Currie moved to London in 1984 and eventually cut a deal with el Records and released Circus Maximus in 1986, the first album released under the Momus name. Momus then moved to the record label Creation releasing The Poison Boyfriend in 1987 followed by Tender Pervert in 1988 and Don't Stop the Night in 1989. With the release of his 1991 album Hippopotamomus, Momus came under attack from the press and the album was considered a record about sex for children.

Momus continued to record with Creation until 1995 where he signed with Cherry Red. 20 Vodka Jellies, released in 1996 was the first of Momus's albums to be released in the United States. Momus has continued releasing albums for 20 years and on rare occasions does a live performance.
