The Republic of Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered between Ukraine in the north, east and south with Romania to the west. Moldova is a member of the United Nations and aspires to join the European Union. Moldova is the only country in the world that has a democratically elected communist government.

Independence from Russia
Moldova was a part of Romania and was incorporated into the Soviet Union after World War II. It gained independence from the USSR in 1991. Following Moldova's independence, the country was left without its own energy supply. Moldova was heavily reliant on Russia's energy supply. Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe.In 2006, the Russian gas supplier Gazprom cut their gas supply after Moldova refused to pay the doubled price increase. They agreed on a price in July of 2006, but the price increased again in 2007.
