Mister Lonely

  • Mister Lonely is a 2007 film by famed indie director Harmony Korine. The film's plot concerns a young man who is a Michael Jackson impersonator living in Paris. This man is lost and makes a living using his impersonation. He meets a Marilyn Monroe look alike at one of his shows. He then joins her to live in a commune in Scotland with her Charlie Chaplin impersonating husband and Shirley Temple impersonating daughter.

In Scotland everyone is considered famous and no one ever ages. There are many other impersonators there as well such as Madonna, James Dean and even the Queen of England. Everyone there hopes to entertain the world. They even build a stage to perform. At one point, a nun falls from a plane and survives. The world is perfect to everyone in it.

Mister Lonely premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. It was also featured at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival then went on to the 2008 South by Southwest Film Festival. The film received mixed reviews such as: "the film is too long, not nearly as funny as it hopes, and some plot elements (what’s with the sheep?) are extraneous to the improvised mood" from Dave Calhoun of Time Out London. On the other hand the Sukhdev Sandhu from Daily Telegraph said "Beautiful, grotesque, dancing always to their own rhythms".
