  • University History

    The school was originally founded as the Fourth District Normal School in 1905, and primarily provided teaching degrees. The name was changed in 1919 to Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, then to Southwest Missouri State College in 1945. A second campus was opened in 1963, about 110 miles southwest of the main campus. Another name change came in 1972, making the school Southwest Missouri State University. Most recently, in 2005, the school name was shortened to simply Missouri State University.
