Six electoral votes are up for grabs in the state of Mississippi. According to polls taken in the days leading up to the election, Republican presidential nominee John McCain was leading Democrat Barack Obama by a more than 10% margin. McCain's lead at one time was much wider, but it began to narrow in September 2008.
