In the 2010 elections held on November 2, Mississippi voters selected four members of the House of Representatives. Polls closed at 8:00 p.m. EST with incumbents Bennie Thompson (Democrat District 2) and Gregg Harper (Republican District 3) projected by CNN to have held their seats.http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2010/results/state/#val=MS The two additional races resulted in a turnover of the seat with Republican Alan Nunnelee defeating the Democratic incumbent Travis Childers in District 1 and Steven Palazzo defeating Democrat Gene Taylor.http://www.foxnews.com/interactive/politics/candidate-list/#state=MS

Voters in Mississippi regularly head to the polls to decide on a variety of elected offices and issues, including the state legislature, which is 52 senators and 122 representatives, all elected for four-year terms. The state of Mississippi created from the Mississippi Territory was admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817. They also seceded from the Union during the Civil War and did not participate in the 1864 or 1868 presidential elections.http://www.shgresources.com/ms/timeline/

Since 1968, Mississippi has voted Republican; the lone exception being 1976 when it supported Jimmy Carter of Georgia.
