Mission of Burma is a post-punk rock band that uses tape looping and other unique sounds, as well as unconventional time signatures and chord progressions. Founded in 1979, they have influenced many bands such as Nirvana, Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Moby.
Sound
While other American bands turned to commercial new wave, or dropped into the hardcore underground, Mission of Burma represented a stateside response to the post-punk bands taking root in England, particularly Wire and Gang of Four. Compared to their foreign counterparts, though, the band was both more experimental (using sampled noise and tape loops) and more traditionally rock-oriented, with a strong sense of melody and Who-like intensity.
Original Lineup
Clint Conley, bass
