Misery is a Rob Reiner-directed 1990 horror/thriller starring Kathy Bates and James Caan. Based on the book by Stephen King, Misery details what happens when a romance novel writer Paul Sheldon is involved in a automobile accident and then taken captive by a delusional fan. While being held captive, Sheldon is forced to write another novel in his Misery romance series. As one of the most critically acclaimed Stephen King movie adaptations, the movie was a success and earned Bates an Academy Award for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes.
