    • Nicknamed "Mama Afrika"
  • Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1932, Miriam Makeba had a long career as a singer and human rights campaigner. Lovingly referred to as "Mama Afrika," she did much in the 1960s to bring African music further into international prominence. She had been exiled from South Africa before returning a free woman in 1989. Some of Makeba's most memorable songs include "Pata Pata," "The Click Song" and "Malaika." She died of a heart attack at age 76 on November 9, 2008.
  • Miriam Makeba Background

In 1963, Makeba testified about apartheid in front of The United Nations. This resulted in the South African government revoking her passport and denying her the possibility of ever returning to her homeland. Makeba took up refuge in London after the festival and met Harry Belafonte, who helped her emigrate to the United States and rebuild her career. She was the first black musician to leave South Africa because of apartheid, and was followed by many others over the years.
