The 2004 film Miracle tells the true story of the Gold Medal winning 1980 United States Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team, known as the Miracle On Ice.
Background
Following their 1960 win, the United States men's ice Hockey team had lost each Olympics to the Soviet Union. Fast forward nearly 20 years and the U.S. is deep in the Cold War and preparing for the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York.
Plot
Herb Brooks is hired to coach the U.S. men's Olympic team for the upcoming Winter games. He convinces the Olympic Committee that in order to beat the Soviets, they must change how they play the game. Coach Brooks assembles a team of college students and they begin to train. It is not until U.S. team ties the Norwegian team in an exhibition game prior to the Olympics that the men join together as one united team. Following the game Coach Brooks makes the players stay on the ice, repeating exhausting drills over and over again. Finally when one player, Mike Eruzione, realizes that the name on the front, Team U.S.A, is more important than his own name on the back, Coach Brooks dismisses the team for the evening. What started as a handful of rival college students, now has evolved to a well conditioned team, all fighting for the same goal, the Gold Medal.
