Minor Threat were poster children for the Washington, DC hardcore punk scene. The band formed in 1980, disbanding only three years later. Out Of Step from 1983 was their only full-length album, but their music had an immeasurable influence on punk rock throughout the following decade. Their final recording—the Salad Days EP, released after the band's demise—contains hints of lead singer Ian MacKaye's next band, Fugazi.
Influence
Minor Threat were not Washington, DC's first hardcore band (a distinction that probably belongs to Bad Brains), but they were identified with their regional scene in much the same way Black Flag was with Los Angeles hardcore. Their legacy was seen in the subsequent straight edge movement—taking it's name from the band's 1981 anti-drug, anti-decadence anthem—which became more and more codified throughout the decade, leading to bands such as Youth of Today. The band's rough, passionate sound, however, influenced the full rock landscape—artists as diverse as Poison Idea and Eddie Vedder would later cite Minor Threat as an influence.
