  • Fuller and the Habitat for Humanity

While in law school at the University of Alabama, Millard Fuller met Morris Dees, who would form the Southern Poverty Law Center. Together, they formed a direct-marketing company. The company did so well, they quickly became very wealthy.

Fuller was a millionaire businessman by age 29, but soon reached a crisis of faith. He and his wife sold their possessions, and gave much the money to the poor, and joined Koinonia Farm, a Christian, multiracial commune founded by Clarence Jordan in 1942 near Americus, Georgia. At Koinonia, Fuller and Jordan began several partnership enterprises, including the first seed of what would become the Habitat for Humanity. Koinonia built modest homes on a non-profit, no-interest basis, to allow families with low incomes to afford their own houses.

Between 1973 and 1976, Fuller and his family moved to Zaire, and started a housing project there. It was a success and when they returned to the U.S., Fuller and his wife founded the Habitat for Humanity.Atlanta Journal: Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller dies (February 3, 2009) Creative Loafing: Millard Fuller, Habit for Humanity founder, dies (February 3, 2009)
