Milky Way Candy

- Created: 1923
- Called Mars Bar outside U.S.
- No caramel in European version
- Squiggly lines on bottom from conveyor belt
- Banana flavor available in Australia

Made by Mars, Incorporated, the American version of Milky Way candy bars have a caramel and nougat center that is dipped in chocolate. It was the first ever candy bar to have filling contained within the chocolate.

The chocolate-malted milkshake was the inspiration for Frank Mars in creating the Milky Way bar in 1924. Originally, both chocolate and vanilla flavored bars were available, and at one point, they were actually combined together. The milk chocolate-covered bar remains one of the more popular on the market today. Recently, Mars has also reintroduced the dark chocolate covered bar and renamed it the Milky Way Midnight.
