Major League Baseball catcher Mike Rabelo currently plays for the Florida Marlins.
Rabelo was originally drafted right out of high school by the Boston Red Sox, but chose to attend college instead. He enrolled at the University of Tampa in 1998. During his third year of college he was again drafted. This time he decided to sign with the Detroit Tigers on June 5, 2001. Rabelo spent the next couple of years between a variety of minor league teams.
He finally made his MLB debut on September 23, 2006, playing in only a single game during the 2006 season. After promising play during the 2007 Spring Training, he injured his elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery, where a ligament from elsewhere in his body is used to repair one torn in his elbow. After a successful recovery, Rabelo rejoined the Tigers as a backup catcher for 51 games that season.
On December 5, 2007, Rabelo was traded to the Florida Marlins.
