Michael Moustakas, nephew of former New York Mets hitting coach Tom Robson, was the second overall first round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals in the June 2007 MLB draft. He currently alternates in the position of short stop and third base for the Royals' Single-A minor league affiliate, the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
At the end of the Blue Rocks 2009 season, Moustakas was the team's leader in home runs with 16 and in RBIs with 86.
In the 2008 season, he played for the Burlington Bees of the Class A Midwest League, he had a .272 (135-for-496) batting average in 126 games, with 25 doubles, 3 triples, 22 home runs, 71 RBIs, 8 stolen bases and 77 runs scored. He was tied for second with Ryan Shealy in home runs among all Royals minor league players. His home run total led the Midwest League in 2008 and ranked third in RBIs. His .468 slugging percentage ranked fourth in the league.
Career Highlights
While at Chatsworth High School, in Chatsworth, California, Moustakas hit a California Prep record of 52 home runs and was West Valley League Player of the Year and part of the California All-State Selection for three years in a row, from 2005-2007. He was also named Baseball America High School Player of the Year and selected as part of the USA Today All-USA high school baseball team in 2007.
Moustakas was named a Carolina League mid-season all-star in 2009 and was a Baseball America Class A All-Star in 2008.
He is currently ranked 11th in the MLB.com Top 50 prospects.
