While attending junior college in California, Jacobs was drafted in the 1999 MLB Draft by the New York Mets. After several successful seasons with the Mets' affiliates, he was selected for the Sterling Award in 2003, given to the best New York Mets prospect. Two years later, Jacobs made his MLB debut on August 21, 2005, playing in 30 games his rookie year. He was then traded to the Florida Marlins on November 24, 2005.MLB.com: Mike Jacobs Bio

Jacobs saw more playing time with the Marlins, making the roster for 136 games in 2006 and scoring a career high 54 runs. He saw slightly less playing time in 2007, playing in only 114 games, partly because of a fractured right thumb that caused him to miss over a month.MLB.com: Mike Jacobs Bio
