Mikael Samuelsson

  • Swedish professional hockey player Mikael Samuelsson currently plays for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League.
  • Early Years

    Samuelsson played hockey for several years in his native Sweden before joining the NHL. He was drafted 145th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 1998 NHL Draft. He split his first season in the United States between the Sharks and their AHL affiliate, playing just four games in the NHL.
  • Trades, Trades, Trades

    On June 24, 2001, Samuelsson was traded to the New York Rangers. He spent just over a season with the Rangers before he was traded again on February 10, 2003 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Following the 2003 season, Samuelsson was traded a third time, to the Florida Panthers on June 21, 2003.
  • Settling Down in Detroit

    Samuelsson signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings on September 17, 2005. The following year, along with fellow Wings players, Samuelsson won the gold medal in the Winter Olympics with Team Sweden. On March 25, 2006, Samuelsson re-signed with the Wings to a three year contract extension.
