Microwave Oven

    • Invented: 1946
    • Inventor: Dr. Percy Spencer
    • Caution: Microwave heated water may boil explosively
    • Do not use metal in microwave
    • Do not use with eggs
    • Can bake a potato
    • Clean by heating up water to allow moisture to soften built-up dirt
  • Microwave ovens are a common household appliance used to warm up or quickly cook food. It can be used to disinfect sponges and cutting boards as well.
  • How does it work

A microwave uses microwave radiation to heat food. The radiation excites polar food molecules, molecules that have positive and negative poles. Excited molecules move faster and create heat warming up the food.
  • Safety

Liquids in smooth containers can be superheated by a microwave. When this happens the liquid is at a boiling temperature but is not visibly boiling. If the superheated liquid comes in contact with some other material it explodes out boiling and could cause harmful burns to the person handling it.
