New Head Coach John Beilein came from West Virginia University came to Michigan with a proven record of success. In his five years leading the Mountaineers, he compiled a record of 104-60 including two trips to the NCAA Elite Eight and a Final Four appearance. He's the only active NCAA coach with 20 win seasons at all four levels competition; junior college, NAIA, Division II & Division I.

Under the inaugural season of Beilein's leadership the Wolverines posted an overall record of 10-22, 6-14 in Big Ten Conference competition and 0-9 against nationally ranked opponents. Additionally two players, C.J. Lee and David Merritt, were Academic All-Big Ten selections. With the Wolverines returning all 5 starters and Beilein's proven recruiting skills next season bodes well for Michigan.

Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball has a tradition of basketball excellence, with 10 Big Ten Conference regular season championships, xix appearances in the NCAA Final Four and winning the National Championship in 1989, beating Seton Hall 80-79. After a self-investigation of allegations of payments from a booster to four players, Louis Bullock, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor and Chris Webber, the university vacated the results of 114 basketball games. These forfeited games included the entire 1992-1993 season and all NCAA Tournament games for 1992 and 1993, both were years the Wolverines made Final Four appearances.

Michigan alumni playing in the NBA include Bernard Robinson of the New Orleans Hornets, Jamal Crawford and Chris Webber of the Golden State Warriors, and Juwan Howard of the Dallas Mavericks.
