University History
The school was originally founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. The first classes were held in 1857, when an all male group of 63 students enrolled. It was not until 1870 that the first women were admitted to the school. Michigan State Football
Michigan State athletics is most noted for its football program, which plays in the Big Ten Conference, which is part of the BCS. The football team's main rivals include the University of Michigan and Notre Dame. After a game on September 18, 2010 against Notre Dame, MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack. Despite this, he planned to return to the team by coaching from the press box two weeks later.
