  • Michelle Bachelet is the current President of Chile and the first woman to hold the office in that country. Both Bachelet and her mother were prisoners under the regime of Salvador Allende in the 1970s. She is regarded as a moderate socialist and is a member of the Chilean Socialist Party. In her 2006 campaign for the presidency, she vowed to continue Chile's free market policies, while increasing social benefits to help reduce Chile's large gulf between rich and poor. Early in her presidency, Bachelet was able to pass legislation guaranteeing health care to the elderly and reforming the electoral system. However, a student revolt demanding higher quality public education, allegations of misappropriation of funds by her administration and the controversial measure allowing women as young as 14 to obtain a 'Morning After Pill' without parent consent, caused a significant drop in her popularity by the end of her first year in office. Since then, she has focused on economic rehabilitation and has secured several free trade agreements, notably with China and Colombia.
