Michael Strahan

  • Michael Strahan is a retired professional football defensive end who played for the New York Giants of the NFL. He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 and holds the record for most sacks in a single season with 22.5. Strahan was a member of the Giants' Super Bowl championship team in 2008.

  • Sack Record

    When Strahan broke the single season sacks record in 2002, many criticized the way he achieved the feat. Before recording the sack, Strahan spoke with Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. On the ensuing play, Favre scrambled to Strahan's side and dove to the turf as Strahan fell on him for the sack. Many Giants' players then patted Favre's helmet in celebration. Observers were critical of the move and accused Favre of taking a dive on purpose in order to help his friend Strahan break the sack record.
  • Retirement

    On June 9, 2008, Strahan announced his retirement after 15 seasons in the NFL. Strahan finished his career with 141.5 sacks, 854 tackles, and seven Pro Bowl selections. It is very likely that Strahan could be a first ballot Hall of Famer in the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he is eligible for enshrinement in 2013.
