He attended Penn State University where he majored in advertising and publish relations and obtained a degree in only three years. He earned a second degree in journalism in 2005. He graduated from Varina High School in Richmond. He was voted 2nd team All-conference in his senior year at Penn State, and was also selected to the All-state team twice in high schoolhttp://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/historical/419723.
Despite his large frame and bruising playing style in the NFL, Robinson was a Career Quarterback all through high school and college. Experts were skeptical on whether a scrambling quarterback could transition to running back successfully in the NFL. Robinson's transition to Running Back was by no means easy or immediately successful, however his determination to succeed in any role eventually won out and silenced the critics. Since his rookie year he has gotten steady situational playing time, and has also been named as a Pro Bowl Special Teams alternate two years runninghttp://www.49ers.com/team/roster/Michael-Robinson/4c3c0ab4-14c7-41ef-864c-7c3d0ccd1671. Academically Robinson has been stellar to say the least. He was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team three times. He also has on-camera reporting experience covering Nittany Lions Basketball as well as appearing on CSTV's Penn State Primetime programshttp://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/historical/419723.
Robinson's role with the 2010 49ers is to continue to be the Special Teams captain and leader, while providing experienced and solid depth at the Running Back position behind perennial Pro Bowl Frank Gore and the young Glen Coffee.
Michael Robinson 2009 Season
Robinson played extensively throughout 2009, albeit mostly on Special Teams. He did see time on the field in both Running Back and Fullback roles, however he has established himself as a Special Teams ace in the league and his primary role last year was defined as suchhttp://www.49ers.com/team/roster/Michael-Robinson/4c3c0ab4-14c7-41ef-864c-7c3d0ccd1671.
Michael Robinson 2006-2008
Robinson has carried the ball progressively less each year for two reasons. First, the emergence of Frank Gore as an elite back. Starting out in 2006 Frank Gore was a relative unknown out of the University of Miami, however by years end he had broken the team rushing record for yards in a single season with 1,695. Second, Robinson's exceptional play on special teams. It is both fortunate and unfortunate at the same time that Robinson has played so well on special teams. Fortunate in that his reputation and on-field execution demand more salary-wise. Unfortunate in that his number of carries at Running Back over the years have dwindled down to single digits.
In 2006 Robinson carried the ball 38 times for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns. In 2007 Robinson carried the ball 26 times for 121 yards and zero touchdowns. In 2008 Robinson carried the ball 19 times for 50 yards and zero touchdowns. In 2009 Robinson carried the ball 3 times for 2 yards...with with zero touchdownshttp://www.49ers.com/team/roster/Michael-Robinson/4c3c0ab4-14c7-41ef-864c-7c3d0ccd1671.
