Tragic Diagnosis
On July 25, 2008, it was reported that Lohberg had been diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare and potentially fatal blood disorder. In an interview with The Miami Herald, Lohberg stated that he may only have weeks to live. Lohberg was scheduled to travel with Dara Torres to Singapore for a final training camp before heading to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but had to cancel in order to seek medical treatment.Miami Herald: Olympic swim coach fighting rare medical condition (July 25, 2008)
