  • Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, as a result of cardiac arrest. His public memorial took place at 10:00 a.m. on July 7, 2009, at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, California. Approximately 20,000 people attended the ceremony. AEG Live, which owns the basketball arena and the nearby Nokia Theater, used both facilities for the event. 11,000 tickets to the memorial were available free, with an additional 6,500 for the simulcast at the Nokia Theater. Fans who registered at StaplesCenter.com were eligible for the random drawing for the tickets. Those without tickets or press passes were not allowed in the venues or in the area.

    A second funeral was held for Jackson on August 1st and 2nd in the Ivory Coast rain forest. Jackson was reportedly crowned as Prince of the Agni villagers in 1992 bearing the official title Prince Michael Jackson Amalaman Anoh.     Many celebrities took part in Jackson's funeral including Smokey Robinson, who opened the service, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Usher, Martin Luther King III, Kobe Bryant, John Mayer and Brooke Shields.
