Michael Giacchino is an American composer who scores films, television shows and video games. After studying at Julliard and The School of Visual Arts in New York City, Giacchino got his start composing the scores for video games such as the Medal of Honor series, Call of Duty and Call of Duty:Finest Hour, and Secret Weapons over Normandy.
In 2001, Giacchino began a fruitful partnership with J.J. Abrams, when he scored the television show Alias starring Jennifer Garner. Giacchino went on to score Abrams' other show Lost, as well as his films Mission Impossible 3, Cloverfield (which Abrams produced) and Star Trek.
Giacchino also scored the animated Pixar films The Incredibles and Ratatouille. He received an Oscar nomination for his work on Ratatouille.
Giacchino won the Golden Globe and an Academy Award for "best original score" for his work in Up. During his acceptance speech at the Oscars, he spoke of the support he received from family, friends and collegues his entire life, which encouraged him in his creative efforts. He then in turn encouraged anyone out there watching who is not receiving the same support he did...saying "it is not a waste of time."
Scoring "Lost"
Giacchino composes all the original music heard in the background on the popular ABC adventure series Lost, which ends after its sixth season in 2010. The music is then performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony, conducted by Tim Simonec. The music primarily consists of a string section, four trombones, piano, harp and percussion instruments.http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Musical_score
Giacchino uses several recurring themes, or "leitmotifs," in Lost, many of them aligned with particular characters or situations. One primary example is called "Hollywood and Vines," and is typically heard when characters are walking across the island or moving to higher ground.http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Musical_score
In addition to the background music, Giacchino has occasionally written songs or music for the show that is actually integrated into the plot. The theme song on multiple Dharma Initiative orientation videos and a few of Charlie's band Drive Shaft's songs were his original compositions.http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Musical_score
Giacchino won an Emmy in 2005 for his work on Lost, as well as that year's ASCAP Film and Television Music Award.

2010 Oscar Acceptance Speech
Here's what Michael Giacchino had to say upon receiving an Oscar for "best original score" for Up.
"When I was nine, I asked my Dad, ‘Can I have your movie camera? That old, wind-up 8-millimeter movie camera that’s in your drawer?’ And he goes, ‘Sure, take it.’ And I took it, and I started making movies with it, and I started being as creative as I could, and never once in my life did my parents ever say, ’ What you’re doing is a waste of time.’ Never….. I know there are kids out there that don’t have that support system. So, if you’re out there and you’re listening, listen to me: If you wanna be creative, get out there and do it. It’s not a waste of time."
