Michael Dukakis was the Democratic candidate during the 1988 American Presidential election. He lost the election to then Vice President and Republican Party nominee George H. W. Bush.

Early Life
Early Political Career
Dukakis served four terms in the U. S. House of Representatives between 1962 and 1970. In 1974 he defeated the incumbent Republican governor of Massachusetts but was defeated for re-election four years later by Democratic rival Edward J. King in the primary. Four years later and Dukakis ran for governor of the state again this time defeating King in the primary. He went on to win the general election and remained governor of the state until 1991.

In 1988 Dukakis challenged Vice President and Republican Party nominee George H. W. Bush and lost the election by a wide margin, only carrying 10 states and the District of Columbia.
