  • A Hitter who Pitches?

A native of Georgia, Owings was an exceptional pitcher and an exceptional hitter even in high school, when he set Georgia's high school home run record with 63. After pitching at both Georgia Tech and Tulane University, Owings was picked by the Diamondbacks in the 2005 amateur draft and made his major league debut in 2007. In 2007, Owings pitched well, if not great, but it was his performance before a hometown Atlanta Braves crowd in August that brought him into the national spotlight. In the game (which Owings won), Owings went 4 for 5, with two home runs, a double, six RBIs, and four runs, making him the first pitcher to ever have amassed such numbers in a single game. Owings finished the season with an 8-8 record and a .333 batting average with 20 hits and four home runs. Owings continued his torrid hitting in 2008, amassing a .417 batting average by the middle of May.
  • Traded to the Reds

On September 12,2008, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Owings to the Cincinnati Reds. The deal was the completion of the trade for Adam Dunn, which took place on August 11, 2008. The Reds also received Dallas Buck and Wilkin Castillo in the trade.ESPN.com: [http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3584426 Owings sent to Reds to finish off Dunn Trade
