  • Controversy

M.I.A., who is the daughter of a militant activist connected to the Tamil Tigers terrorist group, has been accused of supporting terrorism because of imagery used in her videos and in her lyrics.

In 2008, a Sri Lankan rapper named DeLon posted a remix of the song "Paper Planes" on YouTube. The video, which has since been taken down, featured victims of terrorism and other graphic images. M.I.A.'s label, Interscope, issued a cease-and-desist order claiming the video was harmful to her image. In return, DeLon filed a lawsuit against the label for infringing upon his First Amendment rights. Since the accusations surfaced, M.I.A. has publicly denied that she supports terrorism.BBC: Singer MIA denies terror support (August 8, 2008)Paste Magazine: M.I.A. accused of terrorist imagery, Interscope sued (August 6, 2008)
