Metro 2033 Walkthrough

Introduction

Metro 2033 takes place 20 years after a nuclear holocaust wiped out all human life on the surface of the earth, confining the few survivors to the underground metro systems. What's left of the human race now struggles to survive beneath the ruined cities of the world, fending off attacks from hideous mutant beasts, warring communist and Nazi factions, and the mysterious, psychic-powered Dark Ones.

You'll have to scratch and scrounge for every piece of cobbled-together weaponry you can find, and horde your ammunition, which is also used as currency. And you'll have to keep your flashlight, night-vision goggles, and gas mask in working order. How you progress is up to you: you can use stealth to sneak past your enemies, or go in guns blazing. Along the way, you'll meet many allies, not all of whom will survive the adventure. You and your friends will always be outnumbered; if not by ravenous, mutated rats, apes and bats, then by hostile groups of your fellow survivors. Find the fabled D6 facility, and use the powerful weaponry within to destroy the Dark Ones, before they can wipe the last vestiges of humanity from the face of the ruined Earth.

Story

Artyom, a young survivor in the Moscow metro, collects postcards from the days before the blast, yearning to somehow return the world to its vanished beauty. When his stepfather leaves on a dangerous mission to a distant metro station, he entrusts Artyom with completing the task if he should fail. When his stepfather disappears, Artyom must set out on the journey of his life, with the fate of what's left of humanity riding on his shoulders.

His quest takes him through decaying subway tunnels inhabited only by deadly monsters, war zones where the ideologies of the past battle each other still, to the desolate, slag-coated surface, where a few seconds without his gas mask means certain death by suffocation. All the while, the menacing Dark Ones are a constant presence, watching Artyom's progress, and planning his demise.

Gameplay

Metro mixes frantic first-person shooting with tense sequences of stealth. It's up to the player to determine to shoot it out with whatever enemies are present, or to try to sneak past them. Darkness may be your enemy, or it may be your friend, impeding your sight even as it hides. Also mixed in from time to time are missions requiring you to fire from moving trolley cars, the only mode of transportation which still functions in the metro tunnels.

Weapons and Ammunition

Ammo comes in several varieties in Metro 2033. Military Grade Ammo, left over from prewar days, is high quality and dependable. It packs a serious punch, compared to Dirty Ammo, which is made by diluting prewar bullets, and is therefore weaker, but more plentiful. You can exchange bullet types at the shops throughout the subway system. In general, you should keep some Military Grade in hand, to use in case of an overwhelming enemy force. On the other hand, you'll need plenty of ammo by the end of the game, so trading Military Grade in for Dirty is sometimes a good idea. The more you trust your shooting ability--the more you can count on yourself to make your shots count--the more Military Grade you should trade for. You'll end up with less of it, but each individual shot will do significantly more damage. Not all weapons can even use Military Grade, so you'll have to use Dirty for at least some of the game.

Each type of weapon has its own ammo type. The game doesn't show you what type you're looking at when you're making a trade at a shop, so get to know the appearance of each type. There are also arrows, for use with the Helsing crossbow.

Weapons:

  • Knife: Your starting weapon. Your fallback if you run out of ammo. It takes a lot of cuts to kill an enemy, so the knife should only be used when there's no other choice.
  • Throwing Knives: Much preferable to the regular knife. Throwing knives can take out enemies in one shot, making them a very useful tool for silent kills. This may not hold true at long range, but reasonably close, throwing knives are dependable. If possible, gather them up from the body after use. You can reuse throwing knives multiple times.
  • Grenades: These can be useful when noise is not a consideration. Grenades are also available with nails protruding from them, allowing them to stick to walls.
  • Revolver: The basic revolver can be useful as a backup weapon. If you can find one with a scope or, even more useful, a silencer, the revolver's versatility and usefulness will soar.
  • Bastard: An improvised submachine gun with questionable accuracy, but a high rate of fire. Designed for putting a bunch of bullets in the air, and pretty good for that purpose.
  • Kalash: Your basic AK-47, manufactured before the war, and therefore preferable to more recently constructed weapons.
  • Kalash 2012: Like the regular Kalash, but better in every way.
  • Duplet: This double-barrel shotgun features impressive stopping power, but low range and slow reloads. Each barrel is fired independently, with the Left Trigger or Right Trigger; this takes some getting used to, as most other guns use the Left Trigger for zooming in, but it's pretty fun once you're used to it.
  • Uboyneg: An automatic shotgun with a six-shell capacity. You can also use the Uboyneg to perform a melee attack (Left Trigger), giving the gun an extra level of usefulness. To heighten the effectiveness of the melee attack, some models are equipped with a bayonet.
  • VSV: This automatic, silenced sniper rifle is designed for silent kills, something you may be doing a lot of throughout the game. Very accurate, and very lethal.
  • Tihar: The alternative to the VSV. The Tihar's pressurized design--something like a deadly Super Soaker--requires periodic pumping.
  • Helsing: Pressurized like the Tihar, the Helsing fires arrows, which can kill silently. Remember to gather arrows from corpses whenever possible; like throwing knives, arrows can be reused.

Gear

Survival in the underground metro system, and amidst the wastes of the surface, depends not just on weapons, but on specially adapted equipment. Use the gear below to keep yourself breathing and aware of your surroundings.

  • Medkits: Keep a few of these handy, for use in violent situations. The game's health system is regenerative, but if you're taking a bunch of hits and you don't have time to heal naturally, press Y to use a medkit, and restore yourself to perfect health. You can purchase medkits in some shops, and also find them on the bodies of people who didn't use them quickly enough.
  • Gas Mask: An indispensable fact of life in the radiation-soaked world. You'll need your mask every time you're on the surface, and in many areas of the subway system as well. When you start to gasp, it's time to put on the mask. But don't leave it on unnecessarily; you'll waste filters, and also expose the mask to damage in a fight. Keep your eyes peeled for replacement masks on corpses; trade up to a better mask if yours has taken a beating. Press Down on the Direction Pad to put your mask on, and hold Down to take it off.
  • Gas Mask Filters: Running out of these means nothing less than agonizing suffocation in the unbreathable air. If you're in an area of high radiation and you run out of filters, you'll begin to take damage pretty quickly. If you don't make it to a safe place soon, your quest will be at an end. Search for filters constantly; they can be found on some corpses, or bought at some shops. Try to max out your inventory as often as possible.
  • Watch: When you put on your gas mask, you automatically set your watch to measure how long you have left on your filter. Your watch has a light meter, which will tell you how dark the area around you is, and thus, how well concealed you are. When the green light is glowing, you're effectively invisible; when the yellow, you're in an area of moderate darkness, and only moderate safety; when red, you have no concealing darkness around you. Press Left Bumper to consult your watch, and check either your gas mask timer or light meter.
  • Journal: Press Back to bring up your journal, which will remind you of the general goals of whichever mission you're currently on. Embedded in the journal is a compass, which will point toward your destination. When in doubt, follow the little green arrow. After bringing up the journal, press Left Trigger to raise it, so you can its messages.
  • Lighter: When you bring up your journal, you also have the option of lighting your lighter, which will let you read your journal even in pitch black. Press Right Trigger with the journal equipped to use your lighter. But use this sparingly; if there are enemies near, they may be alerted to your presence by the lighter's flame.
  • Flashlight: Many areas of the game are very dark, requiring the use of your flashlight. Unfortunately, enemies can see its beam, making you more conspicuous. When sneaking, use your flashlight only when absolutely necessary. The flashlight's power will run down quickly, causing it to cast a much weaker beam, so keep it charged with the universal charger. Press the Right Stick to turn the flashlight on and off.
  • Night-vision Goggles: Look for this useful item on the bodies of your fallen enemies. Using it in darkness eliminates the need for the conspicuous flashlight. Use the universal charger to keep your night-vision goggles fully charged; they're no good with a dead battery. Hold Up on the Direction Pad to put your night-vision goggles on or take them off.
  • Universal Charger: This handy piece of machinery allows you to convert muscle power into electricity to power your flashlight and night-vision goggles. When you notice either wearing down, or when you just have a spare moment, hold Right Stick to bring up the charger, and repeatedly press Right Trigger to generate power. You'll see the needle on the universal charger's meter climb; when it's all the way on the right, both your flashlight and night-vision goggles are fully charged.

Prologue

  1. Press the button next to the gate, then turn the wheel to open the gate manually. Press X for both actions.
  2. Crouch by pressing B, and move beneath the gate.
  3. Search the lockers and box along the wall on the left, and pick up every item you see.
  4. Run and jump across the pit in the floor (run with LS, jump with A). If you miss and fall down into the pit, find the ladder and climb out, then try again.
  5. Follow your friend up the stairs. At the top, put on your gas mask by pressing Down on the Direction Pad.
  6. Kill the mutants that appear.
  7. Help your friend open the gate by quickly tapping X when prompted.
  8. Follow him outside, and run with him toward the tower.
  9. After the cut-scene, get ready for a few of the stampeding mutants to break off from the pack and attack your group. Kill any mutants who get close to you or your friends.
  10. Survive long enough to trigger another cut-scene.

8 Days Earlier

  1. After the introductory cut-scene, follow Alex out of the room. Turn left, and head down the hallway.
  2. After you meet Hunter, and the intercom warns of a mutant attack, go to Alex to get a knife and begin the fight.
  3. Kill the mutants that drop down from the ceiling and through the window.
  4. Look around frequently; the mutants are quick, and can sneak up and score a hit or two before you even know they're there.
  5. Watch where Alex and Hunter are aiming their guns; their targets are bound to be mutants.
  6. After the battle with the mutants, watch the cut-scene that ends this brief introductory level.

Chapter 1--Let the Journey Begin

  1. Watch the cut-scene of you gathering up your equipment, and pay attention. You'll need to know how to use this stuff. See the Gear section of this walkthrough for a refresher.
  2. When you regain control, go out into the hallway.
  3. Move down the hallway. Turn left, then right. This is a good time to get used to the most useful feature of your journal, its compass, which directs you where to go.
  4. Follow the compass to the armory, and take the stuff the guy there gives you.
  5. Find the guard patrol you'll be joining. The compass will show you the way.
  6. Talk the the man with the beard.

Chase

  1. Sit back and ride the rail-car down the tunnel; there are no enemies to fight, at least to begin with.
  2. After the cut-scene, battle the mutants who attack the rail-car. If one grabs you, you'll be prompted to quickly tap X; do it fast.
  3. After falling off the rail-car (you can't control this), run down the tunnel to catch up with the rest of the patrol.

Chapter 2--Bourbon

  1. Go down the stairs, turn right, and find the little kid. Give him a bullet and he'll lead you where you need to go.
  2. Follow the kid through the tunnels.
  3. Press X to sit in the chair, and talk to Bourbon.
  4. When he's ready to go, follow Bourbon through the tunnels.

Lost Tunnels

  1. Follow Bourbon down the subway tunnel.
  2. After finding the massacred caravaners, follow Bourbon down the small tunnel on the right.
  3. Avoid the hanging cans, which, as the game goes on, will alert enemies to your presence when you're trying the sneak. It doesn't matter here, but you might as well get used to it now.
  4. The same goes for the broken glass on the floor; it won't get you spotted just yet, but it will the next time you encounter it.
  5. Search the small room for ammo. There's some on the shelves on the right, and on the left. Grab the throwing-knife from the table.
  6. Jump over the tripwire running across the floor by the door leading out of the room. Unlike the other traps in this room, this one will get you killed immediately if you touch it.
  7. Disarm the tripwire on the side of the door; there's ammo to be had.
  8. Hide on the side of the next door, and let Bourbon take down the drunk who comes stumbling into the room.
  9. Loot the drunk's corpse for ammo.
  10. Deal with the enemies in the next room. You can sneak around, and/or shoot them. Throwing knives can take down enemies silently. If you're sneaking, watch out for broken glass on the ground on the right. Also, blow out any lamps you see, to give yourself more darkness to hide in. And keep an eye on the LED readout on your watch, to make sure you're hidden.
  11. Find and open the door on the left.
  12. Take down the enemies in the next room, then open the door on the right.

The Bridge

  1. Hop over the crate, and follow Bourbon down the walkway.
  2. Jump over the gap.
  3. Put your gas mask on as soon as you make the jump.
  4. Fight the mutants, and keep following Bourbon. Go up the stairs with him.
  5. Wait for the bandit patrol to pass, then keep moving.
  6. Fight off the mutant behind you, and keep moving. There are more mutants ahead.
  7. Go through the wrecked train, then down the platform below.
  8. Head upstairs. There are more mutants ahead.
  9. Go down the stairs at the end of the platform.
  10. Watch out for the tripwire in the tunnel. Disarm it and move on.
  11. Battle through the big group of mutants.

Lost Catacombs

  1. Search the bodies; you may want to switch gas masks with one of them.
  2. In your strange psychic vision, struggle toward the gate.
  3. When you return to the real world, take off your gas mask and follow Bourbon.
  4. There's a good handgun in the room on the right, but you'll have to be quick to get it. Run along the rusty circular walkway, jumping if you have to. The walkway will fall if you stay on it for too long. Search the corpse at the end of the walkway, then return quickly to the main tunnel.
  5. Follow Bourbon through the tunnel.
  6. Fight off the mutants while you're waiting for the sentries to open the gate.
  7. When the gate opens, go inside.
  8. Approach the sentries; wait for Bourbon to come back.
  9. When Bourbon returns, follow him into the station.
  10. When Bourbon tells you to get some filters for your gas mask, bring up your journal and follow your compass through the station.
  11. At the shop, buy some filters. You can never have too many.
  12. Follow your compass back to Bourbon.
  13. Go with Bourbon through the turnstile
  14. After talking to the guard, follow Bourbon through the doorway, toward the stairs leading to the surface.

Dead City, part 1

  1. Put on your gas mask immediately.
  2. Search the room for items; there's some at the top of the stairs on the left.
  3. Follow Bourbon outside.
  4. Try to make the jump behind Bourbon.
  5. Scramble up out of the ditch, and follow the compass across the platforms, and up the stairs into the building.
  6. Make your way through the building. Search every corpse you see for items, and watch out for mutants. Find the stairs and head up.
  7. On the other side of the building, go down the ramp leading from the wall.
  8. Go through the building on the right; watch out, there are mutants inside.
  9. Outside, cut through the playground, and head into another building, where there are more mutants. Go out the other side of the building.
  10. Fight the large group of mutants just outside the building.
  11. Jump across the crevasse on the right.
  12. Go up the stairs; avoid the bat mutant.
  13. Go up the ramp on the right, into another building, and head down the stairs.

Dead City, part 2

  1. After the load-screen, follow your compass through the doorway, and make your way through the building. Search corpses for items, and be careful of the radioactive water.
  2. Follow your compass out onto the street, and find Bourbon.
  3. Go with Bourbon. Get ready for a battle.
  4. Fight off the big pack of mutants, including a bat. Stay as far away from the bat as possible. It'll swoop in and try to grab you, so be ready to move at any moment.
  5. Don't waste ammo on the bat mutant; it can't be killed yet. Just avoid it, and concentrate on killing the other mutants.
  6. As soon as the bat mutant smashes through the gate behind you, run through the gap.
  7. Run as far as you can, right into the cut-scene ending this chapter.

Chapter 3--Khan

  1. After Bourbon is hauled away, drop down through the grate. You can take your gas mask off now.
  2. This is another area with a lot of enemies. You can either sneak past them, gun them down, or use some combination of the two. If you decide to sneak, remember to extinguish any lights you can, and watch out for booby traps. Use your flashlight sparingly, as it makes you easier to spot. There's a stationary guard on the right, and patrols moving through the room. If you're sneaking, you'll have to be patient.
  3. Move through the area in the direction in which Bourbon was taken. Chances are you'll have to fight at some point, so make sure your guns are loaded up and ready to go.
  4. Crouch to go under the metal screen at the end of the room, then jump over the sandbags.
  5. Run to the door, and go through. You don't have to eliminate every enemy in this area; as soon as you're through the door, you'll lock it behind you, and they won't be able to get to you.
  6. After the cut-scene, follow your new friend, Khan.

Ghosts

  1. Follow Khan down the hallway and into the tunnel.
  2. Go through the door, and continue down the tunnel.
  3. Watch out for the tripwire above you; you can pass safely underneath it, just don't jump.
  4. Move through the subway car, searching for items.
  5. When the shadowy forms appear, listen to Khan, and don't touch them.
  6. Drop down onto the tracks, and follow Khan up onto the platform on the right. Wait for the ghostly train to pass before returning to the tracks and moving on.
  7. Stay with Khan; if you get too far ahead, you'll have no warning when the next group of shadowy forms appears.
  8. Follow Khan out of the tunnel, and down the hallway.
  9. Avoid the glowing green puddle; it's radioactive, and will do damage if you get too close.
  10. Open the door to the right of the puddle, and kill the mutants in the next room.
  11. Search the corpse in the next room, and avoid another glowing puddle.
  12. Follow Khan as he moves into the next room.

Anomaly

  1. Go back into the subway tunnels with Khan.
  2. When Khan tells you not to move, stop and stand still. Wait for the glowing energy sphere to leave before moving on.
  3. In the next section of tunnel, kill the mutants, then stand aside, near Khan, when the energy sphere reappears.
  4. When the sphere is gone, go through the train, and get on the rail-car with Khan.

Cursed

  1. Follow Khan to the machine gun emplacement.
  2. Head down the tunnel, away from the machine gun.
  3. Watch out for mutants; these tunnels are infested with them. If you get overwhelmed, you can lead them back toward the machine gun, which will take them out for you.
  4. Go up the stairs on the right. You'll need your gas mask up here.
  5. Search the corpse in this room. Find the pillar on the left, and plant the explosive on it when prompted.
  6. Get out of the room before the explosive goes off. A little way down the stairs is fine.
  7. Go back into the room, and find the doorway near the pillar. Go down the stairs.
  8. Turn right, then right again a little further on, into another tunnel.
  9. Find more explosives at the end of this tunnel. Go back the way you came, and turn right, then right again, intro another tunnel.
  10. Head down the tunnel, fighting mutants as they appear.
  11. Find the pillar on the right, and place the explosives on it.
  12. Run from the area. Avoid the fireball when the bomb goes off.
  13. Return down the central tunnel, and find Khan.
  14. Follow Khan into the little shrine. There's ammo to be had in here.
  15. Crouch to drop down through the panel in the floor which Khan holds up for you.

Armory

  1. Be careful of the radiation. Crouch and go down the small tunnel.
  2. Drop down, turn left, and go down the tunnel.
  3. Go into the station through the gate.
  4. Go up the ramp on the right, and along the platform.
  5. Head through the door on the right. Turn left, and go into the room where the people are talking.
  6. After the cut-scene, run from the guards. You're handcuffed, so you can't use any weapons or other gear.
  7. Follow the other handcuffed guy through the halls and rooms of the station. Turn left, and crouch when you go by the bar on the left, where there are guards shooting at you.
  8. Turn left, and go up the stairs and along the walkways.
  9. After the cut-scene in which you meet Andrew the Smith, follow him down the hallway.
  10. There are shops on the left, where you can buy weapons, and exchange military grade ammo for other varieties.
  11. When you reach the group of Andrew and his friends, drop down into the hole on the left, and wait for the rail-car to roll over you.
  12. Go to the ladder and press X to hide yourself in the rail-car.

Chapter 4--War

  1. After the cut-scene, sneak up the tunnel toward the platform where the rail-car is stopped.
  2. Find the stairs on the left of the platform. This area is very dark, and crawling with enemies. Be careful using your flashlight. A little further on, you'll have a chance to shoot some enemies, but here you should probably sneak past the ones on the rail-car, who will all come at you if any of them see you.
  3. Go down the stairs. Watch out for the guard on the right at the bottom of the stairs.
  4. Follow the compass along the platforms and walkways. There are holes in the ground which will kill you instantly if you fall through, so you'll probably need to use your flashlight, but do so as little as possible.
  5. Go down the ramp on the left, just past the line of sandbags. Go forward a few steps, then turn right.
  6. Continue along the walkway, then go up the stairs. There are guards on the left; one of them should have a set of night-vision goggles, which will come in handy.
  7. Turn right past the sandbags, and go up the ramp, to the end of the platform. There are more guards between you and your goal.
  8. Find the broken section of railing at the end of the platform, and drop down onto the pipe below it.
  9. Turn left, and walk along the pipe to the wall. Drop onto the duct below. Look for the board straight ahead, and jump across it, onto another section of pipe. Turn left, and follow the pipe down to another section of pipe.
  10. Follow the pipe along to a girder; get onto it, turn right, and follow it to the end.
  11. Jump onto the walkway, onto another duct, turn left, and follow it to the end.
  12. Drop onto the walkway on the left, then onto the pipe, and onto the ground.
  13. Put on your gas mask, and follow your compass to the end of the area.
  14. Jump inside the pipe in the far wall. Follow the pipe to a ladder on the right.
  15. Climb up the ladder. At the top, you can take your mask off.
  16. Climb up the ladder on the left. Kill the guards at the top of the ladder, then turn left, and go up the stairs.
  17. Turn right, and go down the tunnel. Watch out for the rail-car with the machine gun on it.
  18. Go through the doorway on the left, and open the door inside.
  19. Go straight, and open the next door.

Trolley Combat

  1. After the cut-scene, follow the other people down the hallway.
  2. After the next cut-scene, when you regain control, shoot the enemies.
  3. Take out the rail-cars with machine guns that come at you from behind. There are also enemy soldiers on the sides of the tunnel. Listen to your friends' directions to know where to shoot.
  4. When the rail-car you're on stops, shoot the enemies on the platform. Watch out for another enemy rail-car behind you.
  5. Shoot the barricade in front of you so your rail-car can proceed.
  6. Once through the barricade, watch out for more enemies on the left, and another rail-car behind you.
  7. Shoot at the tank that appears on the left, and another rail-car on the same side.
  8. When you see the next rail-car, don't bother shooting at it; it's invincible, and will die on its own.
  9. In the next chamber, look to the right, across the wide gap, to see the enemy bulldozer. You'll be alerted by the frantic screams of your friends.
  10. Shoot the support pillars beneath the section of track where the bulldozer is. Keep shooting until you take out the pillars, toppling the bulldozer into the chasm below.
  11. Once you're out of the rail-car, follow your friend, and open the door.
  12. Turn right, and find another door. Open it.
  13. Go straight, turn left, and open yet another door.

Depot

  1. When you find yourself back on a rail-car, duck to avoid the pipes above.
  2. Shoot the enemies on the tracks in front of you, and on the platform on the left.
  3. Duck to take cover behind the rail-car's sides. The enemy fire will wear down this protection, so take out as many of them as you can.
  4. Watch out for more low-hanging pipes after you're through the station.
  5. There are more enemies ahead, and more pipes. Shoot the enemies, and duck to avoid the pipes.
  6. Fend off the mutant attack. Take them down as quickly as possible. You'll lose an ally here, but that can't be avoided.
  7. After you're thrown from the rail-car, head down the tunnel to the subway car. Search it for ammo, but watch out for the traps.
  8. Go back to the broken pipe, and crouch to enter it.
  9. If you turn right, you can follow the pipe down to a corpse with some ammo, but you'll have to use your gas mask when you get close to it.
  10. Turn left and follow the pipe until the section ends.

Defense

  1. Go forward; the soldiers ahead are friendly.
  2. Talk to the soldier on the raised platform.
  3. After the cut-scene, defend against the army of mutants that comes running at you down the tunnel.
  4. After the attack, go up to the wounded soldiers on the platform.
  5. Go into the enclosure; search the corpse by the machine gun to find some ammo.
  6. Head through the doorway and up the ramp, to the platform with the bed. Open the box on the floor to find some more ammo.
  7. Go down the ramp, turn right, and go through the doorway into the subway tunnel.
  8. In the next section of tunnel, get up on the small pile of sandbags on the left. From there, hop up onto the platform.
  9. As you move down the platform, watch out for holes in the floor, which will kill you instantly if you fall down them.
  10. There'll be mutants running in and out of the holes in the floor and ceiling, pretty much for the whole time you're in this area of tunnels. Some will attack, some will just go about their business. Of those that attack, most will be frightened off by a shot or two, and run off into another hole. Kill any mutant that gets too aggressive. Keep a full clip of ammo in your gun, and keep your eyes peeled for attacks.
  11. Check the platform on the right for ammo.
  12. At the end of the tunnel, go up the ramp and into the bunkhouse. There's ammo inside.
  13. Drop down through the hole in the bunkhouse floor, and search the lower story for more ammo. Watch out for the tripwire at the far end of the first floor.
  14. Go back out into the subway tunnel. Find the next tunnel, and search it for ammo.
  15. Search the small rooms off the sides of the main tunnel. Some are on the same floor, some are up short flights of stairs.
  16. Go through the doorway at the far end of the tunnel. Search this room as well.
  17. Head into the chamber on the left, and through it into the next section of tunnel.
  18. Go around the barriers. Continue down the tunnel.
  19. Head through the doorway on the right, and down the hallway.

Child

  1. After the cut-scene, go through the doorway and up the stairs.
  2. Turn left, and go down the tunnel. Fight off the mutants that attack from the right. Watch out for holes in the floor.
  3. Your control will be loose, due to the fact that you're carrying the kid on your back. This will make it more difficult to aim and move accurately. You may end up using more ammo than you normally would.
  4. Go up the ramp, turn right, and go down the hallway.
  5. Watch out for the tripwire at the end of the hallway. You have to jump over it, which is made more difficult by the weight of the kid on your back. Get a good running jump.
  6. Go down the hallway, through the room, and into the next section of tunnel.
  7. Where the tunnel forks, go right, down another hallway, through another room.
  8. Head over the walkway, and down another hallway.
  9. Follow the tunnel on the right.
  10. Crouch to get into the next section of tunnel.
  11. When you come to the large room with the broken ceiling, climb up the ramps and walkways leaning precariously against the walls.
  12. At the rim of ledge circling the upper part of the room, turn left and walk around to a room.
  13. Reunite the kid with his mother. She'll offer you some ammo, which you can choose to either accept or decline.
  14. Talk to the soldier, the turn left, and go down the tunnel.
  15. There are merchants on the right, if you need some supplies.
  16. When you're stocked up, continue down the tunnel.

  10. Watch out for the bat mutant, who will appear somewhere in this area.
  11. Here you have the option of searching the enclosed area, which contains some rooms where you'll find some ammo. It's dangerous, as there are a number of tripwires guarding the doorway. If you want to check it out, jump over the tripwires, from one piece of furniture to another. Return to the room you just left when you're done searching this area.

  17. Find the staircase beneath the small geometrical structure, and go down.

Black Station

  1. After the cut-scene, it's safe to take your gas mask off.
  2. Approach the man behind the bars. Take the gun he offers you.
  3. Go down the hallway to the right. Use your night-vision goggles here, if you have them. Watch out for the guards up ahead, behind the sandbag barrier, and for the traps in the hallway. Some of them are alarms, like broken glass, and will alert the guards to your presence. There's also a tripwire, which will trigger a huge hunk of wood with spikes in it, which will kill you if it hits you. If you hit the tripwire, move back as fast as you can, and you may be able to avoid the trap.
  4. Get past the guards however you want, then go to the left.
  5. Go up the walkways, and along until you find the hole in the wall. Watch out for can-traps here.
  6. Go down the stairs. There are more enemies in the room on the right.
  7. Head to the left, along the platform.
  8. Drop through the hole in the ground, and turn left.
  9. Go up the ramp, then up the stairs.
  10. Head through the broken door beyond the fire, then turn right. There are more enemies to be dealt with here.

  15. In the psychic vision, run down the hallway, away from the Dark One. Duck to get under the gate.

  7. Fight the mutants on the street.
  8. Follow your compass down the street, and meet up with your friend.

  4. Find the hole in the wall, and go through.
  5. Go up the ramp, and crouch to get through the hole in the wall.
  6. Open the door on the right as far as you can. Use a gun to shoot away the plank of wood blocking the other door.
  7. The other members of your group will let you out. Follow them.
  8. Search the corpse when the guy tells you to. Watch out for the bat mutant that attacks through the window.
  9. The door you need to go through, on the other side of the room, is blocked. Face away from it, and turn right, then right again, to find a decaying door, which you can break through with your knife.
  10. Go through the broken door, and up the ramp, to the hole in the wall. Go through the hole.
  11. Search the corpse in the next room for ammo.
  12. Shoot the chandelier above you to cause it to come crashing down, opening the main door and allowing your friends to come through.
  13. Move on with your group. Watch out for the bat mutant that appears. Don't bother shooting it, just keep your distance.
  14. After the bat mutant leaves, go down the hall, and up the stairs on the right.
  15. Turn left, and go up the ramp, through the doorway, and down the hall.
  16. Destroy the decaying door on the right, and go through it, and to the right.

  2. Turn right, open the door, and head down the hallway. There's another ape mutant lurking here; kill it.
  3. Search the corpse on the right for ammo.
  4. Go through the narrow opening near the windows, and search the corpse in the next room.
  5. Open the door on the right, and deal with the ape mutant on the other side.
  6. Go through the door the mutant came from.

  9. Move along the crawlspace, find the duct, and climb into it.

  13. Go through the hole in the wall on the right, and through the tunnel.
  14. Go through the doorway on the right, and up the stairs on the left.

Driving to Sparta

  1. After the cut-scene, go around the car and find the guy in the alcove in one wall.
  2. Take the free guns he gives you.
  3. When you're all stocked up, go up the stairs.
  4. Talk to Miller when you're ready to go.

Chapter 6--D6

  1. After the cut-scene, get on the mounted flamethrower.
  2. Use the flamethrower to kill the mutants that come rushing down the tunnel at you.
  3. The mutants move along the walls as well as the floors, so keep the flamethrower moving.
  4. If one of the mutants gets up on the car, outside of your range, get off the flamethrower and take the mutant out with your own guns.
  5. After the cut-scene, follow Miller and the others to the door.

Dungeon

  1. Follow your group into the complex.
  2. When the others are ready, lined up by the gate, hit the button on the right, and the one on the left-hand wall, to open the gate.
  3. Go through the gate, and fight the mutants in the next room. They come from the front and back, so keep moving.
  4. Follow the group into the next room, and fight more mutants.
  5. Go into the next room, where there are more mutants to fight.
  6. Follow the group to another gate.
  7. Don't worry about the mutant that shows up and kills the guy; it can't be helped.
  8. Go through the gate.

Cave

  1. Wait for the gate to open. Put on your gas mask.
  2. When the door is open, follow the guys into the next room, and up the stairs.
  3. Walk across the room, fighting off the mutants. There are two waves of them.
  4. Head out of the room, and go down the hallway, to another gate.
  5. When the gate is partway open, crouch to go under it.
  6. Move through the rooms and hallways. Watch out for the super-strong mutant that attacks you. He doesn't like light, so keep your flashlight on. He scurries back to his holes when he's shot, so you'll need to be patient.
  7. Keep moving. You can break through the decaying doors. When you see one, break it down and look for items beyond it.
  8. Follow your compass to one particular decaying door, and break it down. Search the safe on the left for items.

  17. When the subway train arrives, get on it.

D6

  1. Get off the lift, turn right, and go down the stairs with Miller.
  2. Go through the train. When Miller pries open the door, wait for him to open the one in the other train.
  3. Jump across to the other train. Avoid the exposed power lines on the ground.
  4. Follow Miller down the stairs and across the platform.
  5. Go up the stairs into the control room.
  6. Open the door on the other side of the control room, and go up the stairs.
  7. At the top of the stairs, go around the ledge opening the panels in the wall. When Miller tells you which generator to start up ("First button, third button," etc.), press and hold down X to get it running. Run around the ledge, getting the generators started, until the power's on.
  8. Return to the control room. Be careful of the falling section of stairs.
  9. Follow Miller out of the control room, and down the stairs to the platform.
  10. Get on the lift, and ride it down.
  11. At the bottom, get off the lift.

  13. Check the room for ammo, then follow your group.
  14. Wait for your group to get the computers running.
  15. Follow Miller and the other guy back down the hallway. Watch out for the mutants.
  16. Follow Miller to the other lift and ride down.
  17. Get off the lift at the bottom, and move to the left with Miller.
  18. Kill the mutant spheres. Don't let them explode near you. Keep moving.
  19. As you move through the area infested with the mutant spheres, take them down as quickly as possible. Keep them from killing Miller; you'll have to start over if they kill Miller (or you).
  20. Once the spheres have spawned, you can destroy the holes they came from. Take out as many of these as you can, or else the spheres will keep spawning, and attack you from behind. This gets pretty hectic. You have to protect Miller, who does nothing to help you. Get to the end of the tunnel.

Biomass

  1. Follow Miller through the room with the mutant spheres. You don't have to worry about keeping him safe now; just worry about yourself.
  2. Destroy the holes as you go, so the spheres don't spawn behind you.
  3. Climb the ladder; at the top, it's safe to remove your gas mask.
  4. Press the button next to the door to the right of the control panel to open the door.
  5. Go through the door and down the stairs.
  6. Turn right, and climb the ladder.
  7. Press the red button to get into the crane.
  8. Use the screen on the left to judge the crane's position. Move the crane over each of the three circles, until the computerized voice says "Contact zone reached." Use Right Trigger to lower the crane onto each circle. You have to do this quickly, as the giant mutant is attacking you the whole time, and will destroy the crane if you take too long. Put the crane down onto each of the three circles.
  9. When you've done all three, return the crane to its original position, then press X to get out of it.
  10. Go back down the ladder, down the shorter ladder, and across the platform to the stairs.
  11. Go back upstairs and into the control room.
  12. Follow Miller down the hallway, and into the lift.

Separation

  1. Follow Miller down the stairs, and along the platform.

  3. Pick up the guidance system, next to the box on the left.
  4. Get on the train, and bring the guidance system to Miller.

Chapter 7--Tower

  1. Put on your gas mask.
  2. Fight the mutants that attack your group. All of this should be familiar; almost the entire game has been a flashback, and it has finally caught up to the present, where you began, battling the mutants on your way to the tower.
  3. After the cut-scene, follow Miller across the ground. Stay close to him the whole way; if you stray too far ahead, you'll be killed.
  4. Fight through the waves of mutants that attack you.
  5. When Miller stops to battle mutants, stop with him, and help him kill them.
  6. Get into the enclosed area at the base of the tower. More mutants will attack, but here at least you're safe from the bat mutant.
  7. Follow Miller through the enclosed area, into the elevator at the bottom of the tower.

Top

  1. When the mutant bat flies in, back up into the small room behind you. Don't waste ammo; he can't be killed just yet.
  2. When the bat leaves, turn right, and go up the ramp. Crouch at the top of the ramp to get under the obstruction.
  3. Wait for the bat to go by again, then continue moving to the right.
  4. Look for ammo on the right, then turn left, and move along the platform.
  5. Crouch to get under the fallen machine, and keep moving.
  6. Where the path splits, go to the left, along the outside of the tower.
  7. When you come to the large gap, back up, take a run at it, and jump over.
  8. Find the staircase on the left, and go up.
  9. Move along the platform, and find the hole in the wall on the left. Inside, you'll find Miller. Don't approach him yet.
  10. Make sure your best weapon is fully loaded, preferably with Military Grade ammo.
  11. Approach Miller. Keep your eye on the wall to the right, and get ready to shoot.
  12. When the bat mutant bursts in, you need to put it down before it can kill Miller. Get right up close to it, and pump as many rounds as you can into its head. This is the toughest mutant out there, so don't scrimp on the ammo. This all occurs in slow motion, so you should have no problem emptying a whole clip into the beast's head.
  13. Go past the carcass of the bat, and turn left. Move along the platform.
  14. Find the broken piece of slag on the right. Climb up it.
  15. Go straight, and find the ladder. Climb up.
  16. Quickly tap X when prompted.
  17. Go straight ahead, then through the doorway on the left.
  18. There are filters in the box at the bottom of the stairs on the left; grab them. Then head up the stairs.
  19. At the top of the stairs, go along the walkway, and out through the door.
  20. Turn left, and follow the walkway around to the ramp on the right. Go up the ramp.
  21. Go through the doorway on the right.
  22. Jump across the gaps between the broken sections of walkway.
  23. Quickly tap X when prompted. Make sure to start tapping immediately, and to keep doing it for as long as the prompt is on the screen.
  24. Climb the ladder on the left.
  25. Go out along the walkway, toward the antenna.
  26. In the psychic vision, walk straight forward; ground will rise up to support you. Open the door on the wall.
  27. Walk back to the center of the room, and keep going, to the opposite wall. Again, ground will rise beneath you. Again, open the door on the wall.
  28. Return to the center, turn 90 degrees to the left or right, walk straight to the wall, and open the door.
  29. Turn around and repeat the process one more time. Go through the door.
  30. In the next section of the vision, run from the shadowy figure pursuing you. Whenever you find yourself facing the figure, turn and run back, away from it.
  31. When you find yourself going in circles around the same area, turn around and go back.
  32. Turn right at the end of the hallway.
  33. In the next section, turn and run down the path.
  34. Jump to clear the gap in the floor, and run along the ground as it forms around you.
  35. Run through the tunnel as it assembles itself out of the stones floating in the air.
  36. When the flash comes, the Dark One is behind you. Don't let him catch you.
  37. At the first fork in the forming tunnel, go straight.
  38. At the second fork, go right.
  39. Jump to the platform on the left, then to the one in the center.
  40. Jump to the narrow ledge on the right. From there, jump back onto the path in the center.
  41. At the next fork, go left.
  42. When Hunter gives you the gun, turn around and shoot down the pursuing Dark One, and save the human race.
