Metaplace.com was an online, Flash based website that enabled users of all skill levels to create their own virtual worlds. Worlds in Metaplace ran in Adobe Flash Player, which means that getting started in Metaplace required no downloads.
Metaplace.com officially closed their doors on January 1, 2010.http://metaplace.com/ugc_announcement.php
For more advanced users, Metaplace had a full-featured scripting backend that allowed people to manipulate everything in their world - from the avatars to the chat system to the objects that are displayed. Worlds could be created as social hangouts, games, classrooms, discussion halls, virtually anything. There was a wiki with full information about how to do the more advanced scripting and take advantage of the technological capabilities of Metaplace.
In September 2009, Metaplace released brand new avatars including masks, accessories, costumes, and more!
On January 1, 2010, Metaplace.com closed to the public. Metaplace as a company is still existing, and is working on a new unannounced project.
What is Metaplace?
Metaplace is a website that allows users of all skill levels to build their own virtual world. From socialization, playing games, customizing your avatar, shopping, dancing, and making your own creations to share with others - there is plenty for everyone in Metaplace to do. Each registered user gets their own virtual space for free, after which they can choose to upgrade it in a variety of ways. You can buy more additional worlds, or upgrade to a VIP subscription for more special perks.
Metaplace features embeddable worlds that can be inserted into a MySpace page, a blog, or any website with the click of a button. There is a fun game on top of the entire service that allows you to level up and earn coins based on your activity as a builder, socializer, or explorer. There are events held regularly to attend such as live musicians, dance parties, discussion groups, and film screenings.
Metaplace is currently in Open Beta, and is available for everyone to try out without a download.
