At least commercially, Metallica is one of the most successful metal bands ever, and certainly the most successful of the "thrash metal" bands that emerged in the early 1980s. After the success of their video for the epic single "One" on MTV in 1989, the band followed up with their self-titled "Black album" (so nicknamed for its all-black cover), which went on to sell nearly 15 million copies as of 2008.
