Guns of the Patriots was released to generally positive reviews, receiving perfect scores from Game Pro, PlayStation: The Official Magazine, Japanese magazine Famitsu, and Empire Magazine. Believed to be faithful to fans in its continuation of the series, MSG 4 has been praised for its technical achievements, new control scheme, camouflage system, and overall shift towards an increasingly free-form, "replayable" style of gameplay. One major criticism that was brought up by several reviewers was in regards to Metal Gear Solid's storyline, which many felt was too confusing and poorly written. Players may need to review prior titles for clarification. Several publications printed articles concerning Konami's limitations to pre-release reviewers regarding the length of cut-scenes and size of the installation. Due to these restrictions several magazines delayed their reviews until the restrictions were lifted.
